Closed in 1994, it was reopened only in 2001, and is now the only independent distillery on the island. Bruichladdich still uses original Victorian machinery, and does not use any computers to control production. Its products all have a natural color, without any addition of caramel, and are bottled without cold filtration, to preserve the entire aromatic heritage of the assemblies. The aging takes place on the island, and thus gives the whiskeys an unmistakable marine note. The Master Distiller of Bruichladdich, Jim McEwan, is unanimously considered one of the greatest living distillers.
